These belts transfer power through a grip on the pulley and belt tension. It does so as a result of friction between the driving and the driven pulley. Types of Auto V-Belt

Standard V-Belt
The standard v-belt, also known as classical or conventional v-belt, is the earliest forms of V-belt and is widely used in power transmission. Standard auto v-belts have various dimensions designated as Y, Z, A, B, C, D, and E. When using DIN standards, their designation is denoted by numbers equal to the belt's top width in millimeters.

Narrow V-Belt
Narrow auto belts are similar to wedge auto belts. They are also used for transmitting larger loads in a smaller form. The designations used for narrow belts are 3V, 5V, and 8V. The numbers denote the top width of the belt multiplied in terms of 1/8 of an inch. Like other belt sections, its included angle is also 40°. Narrow belt sections are standardized and mostly used in the North American region.

Wedge V-Belt
Wedge auto belts are a primarily used for high power transmission with reduced space requirements. They can operate at 1.5 to 2 times the load of classical v-belts with the same top width. Because of the higher power rating, fewer wedge belts are needed to transmit the load.

Double or Hexagonal V-Belt

What are the Common Auto V Belt Problems

How do you get the most out of your V belt? By examining the v belt, you can check for failure symptoms and replace belts before they fail.
Sidewall Wear
V belt sidewall wear is most often caused by worn or damaged pulleys. There could also be a number of other reasons why auto V belt sidewalls get worn. It could be because of intense heat, belts that have excess oil or grease on them, moisture and weathering elements.
Pulleys are usually replaced when the v belt is changed. If you notice that the pulley is bright and shiny, it usually means that the pulley needs to be replaced.
Back Wear
Back wear on the V belt is common when the belt is forced on the pulley and there is some slack in the belt which is causing undue vibration against the idler. Worn out idlers are sometimes the cause of this problem.
Ensure that the belts have the correct amount of tension when they are installed. Belts that are fitting fine, should be repositioned 24-48 hours after installation for proper functioning.
Soft or Swollen Belts
When auto V belts are exposed to excess oil and grease, they tend to soften and swell. If this happens, the V belts will not fit the pulleys properly.

Measuring for Your New Auto V-Belt
If you are replacing an auto v-belt, you might be thinking "No problem, I'll just measure the old one and find a new one equal to that length." Keep in mind that with that approach you will need to account for stretch – as old belts in need of replacement typically have – and adjust your measurement for a slightly shorter length.
If this is a new installation, you can measure for a new v-belt by looping a string or narrow rope around the sheaves as the belt would, pull it tight, mark or cut the string, and use a tape measurer to get the length. Measure the top of the old belt or the sheave groove to get the width that you will need.
Environmental Considerations
So you've got the length and width of the belt you need, but there are several v-belts for different applications and environments. Some questions you might want to ask yourself include:
Did the old belt fail? In what way? How can that be improved?
At what speeds will the belt be operating?
What kind of load will it be transferring?
Are oil, dust, and other contaminants a factor?
